6:22 P.M. — The leader of Riverdale High School’s exceptional student education department passed away today.
Barbara Browning, 57, who taught full-time in the Lee County School District since August 1982, was en route to the hospital with her husband after becoming ill at school, said family friend Jerry Anderson. She also taught in Glades County from 1974 to 1981.
“She was very loving and giving to the kids. If there was something she could help them with in class or out of class, she was always available to them,” said Phyllis Salter, who taught with Browning for more than 25 years.
The school and the district’s ESE department will work out arrangements to continue her students’ education, school district spokesman Joe Donzelli said. Her death was announced via e-mail throughout the school system by Superintendent James Browder.
Riverdale principal Gerald Demming could not be reached for comment.
Browning’s husband, Ernest Browning, also teaches at Riverdale and is the school’s choral director. He was not available for comment.
The Exceptional Student Education program provides individual programs and services to help educate students with disabilities.
“She always wanted them to be successful and to try their hardest,” said Anderson, who knew Browning for 31 years and was best man at her wedding.

Big Brother fans will get an extra hour of finale this season. The eyeball network has announced they will be slapping another 60 minutes of back-stabbing and treachery – all amongst friends, of course – onto the 11th season finale. SANTA ANA, Calif. — The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has filed a discrimination lawsuit against Target Stores Inc., alleging the retailer failed to make reasonable accommodations for a California employee with cerebral palsy.
The lawsuit filed Thursday in U.S. District Court in Santa Ana argues that a Target store in Orange County reduced 29-year-old Jeremy Schott's hours because of his medical conditions.
EEOC attorney Anna Park says Schott struggled to communicate, but was forced to go to meetings involving work issues and job performance without a job coach or parent to help him, even though his job coach and parents had asked to attend.
Park says Minneapolis-based Target was aware of Schott's disabilities and needs when he was hired.
Target did not return a call for comment Monday afternoon.
